Katana Standard
Do bokken / katana bokuto weight and the same thing?

Simple question to those who have practiced kenjutsu for a while. I have a pretty bokken Robust and heavy / bokuto, and I was wondering if any weight standard bokken close to a real iron katana. After all, the blade of the katana is much thinner than the corresponding "blade" on the bokken (the "Blade" is like thinking that the handle). So it would not be too farfetched to believe they weight about the same thing. Kenjutsuka What do you think? Erratum: "The blade is also believed that the round" should read "the blade is too thick the handle. "A typo.

The quick and dirty answer is no, "standard" bokuto do not weigh the same as the corresponding of shinken. bokuto standard length are Japanese white oak that is not a particularly dense wood. The preference for this material is not because it replicates the weight or balance or Shinken, but because it is suitable for contact with another bokuto during training. If a bokuto is relatively dense, it is more prone to burst / break during training. Softer woods can absorb much impact better, and tend to dent rather than shatter. There are some exotic woods used to manufacture bokuto, which are much denser. I have a bokuto which is made from Goncalo Alves (tiger woods), which is heavy enough as it is a very dense wood. I know others who have ebony, which is among the densest … but is also very tricky because it can explode on impact. These woods are good for solo training if you do not iaito or training in an area where a Iaito Shinken or could cause alarm. However, it is not "standard" bokuto. This That said, the weight is not really as an important variable that the balance of the weapon. Two Shinken with equal weight, but have a balance distinguished by an inch or two will feel very different. Ultimately, each Shinken has its unique feel. Thus, it is somewhat irrelevant if bokuto weighs like a katana specific or even if it has the same weight distribution, because there is no real standard for how one should feel katana (even if there are general parameters). It's really a matter of preference for the practitioner and / or school in which they practice.
