Methods of charging Nimh Batteries
NiMH is an acronym for the nickel-Metal Hydride. NiMH is similar to the rechargeable NiCd (Nickel Cadmium) batteries with the difference that the conductor positive (anode) is made of an alloy hydride less toxic compared to cadmium. The battery type NiMH offers 3 times more energy storage compared to NiCd, but at the same time, the discharge rate of Nimh Battery is relatively higher under high loads. The overall performance of this battery is better than NICDS.
NiCd and NiMH batteries are the most difficult among other in the process of pricing. The battery overcharging lithium-ion and lead-acid can be controlled by setting a maximum charge voltage. In batteries nickel-based, it is not the trickle charge voltage so, pricing depends on the strength of current through the battery. The tension in doing so is not fixed. The charging efficiency of NiMH batteries is 66%, which means you need to put 150 hours of your amp to the battery for all 100 amp hours you get out.
One of the cheapest ways to charge NiMH batteries is the Night of pricing in which the battery is charged at C/10 (10% of rated capacity per hour) or less. This means a 100 Mah Battery can be charged at 10 mA for 15 hours. This method provides a full charge and does not require a sensor end load.
To load more quickly, use a timer to charge the NiMH battery C/3.33 for 5 hours. It's faster method of loading. This method may be risky at times because it requires that the battery is completely discharged before recharging. One way to avoid this is to use the charger that automatically discharges the battery at 1 volt per cell and then load is open for 5 hours.
