Is it possible to convert an Electronics XMODS original "hobby grade?

I'm looking at on-road R / C car, and I was wondering if I can convert the RadioShack XMODS electronic hobby-grade micro size. I know I will probably continue to use engines RadioShack, however. If you Want to know what I mean, these are pieces that you buy in the shops, hobby, and hobbies as shopping mail-order/online turn. I have a good estimate Should I use a Hitec HS-55, Novak Spy Micro ESC and receiver of some sort, like a Novak XXL or Futaba R142JE on the side to fit the tight space of the old board.
