How can I connect my Sony Handycam Dcr TRV720 to my computer via the serial cable that goes with it?

I plugged and on and the computer does not detect my video camera. What can I do? Do I need software? It also comes with cables AV to go to my AV cable on my computer I could hook to help because it does not detect that either. Thank you!
