How can I keep my phones battery from going dead so easily?

Well, I have a Cell Phone UTStarcom and when my mother takes it, it is never on the charger, it goes for weeks without being on the charger and I think it affects my battery. I tried looking for a new battery, but the seller MetroPCS said they are not my kind of cell phone and the most finding a battery because it would be really difficult. We went to batteries plus and made a special order for a new battery so it should be here in 3 to 5 business days. Can anyone tell me how to fix this problem?
