Am I obligated to adjust or get something if I bring my laptop on the plane?

I heard People say that u have to turn the laptop on airplane mode or something or u need another pack battary or something. What should I do? I have an HP Pavilion dv6000 if that helps. and an iPod in the airplane is just fine?
